2. Rewrite the presentations above in the syllabary. Research the seven Cherokee clans. Create a presentation to share with the class about your findings. If you have a clan, create a poster or a mask and small poster to represent your clan. Make certain to include the historical clan attributes, and then add the name of the clan and its color written in the syllabary. Colors have been provided for you in the vocabulary list.
Homework: Prepare a presentation like those in the video about yourself. Be prepared to introduce yourself in this way to the class. Include pictures of the family members you mention if you have them and any other illustrations that would go well with what you are saying. Illustrations could be presented using presentation software or poster board. Write the labels for your pictures in both syllabary and phonetics.
Cultural Note: Cherokee clans are matrilineal. In times past, the only way one could be Cherokee was to belong to a Cherokee clan. If a person had not been born to a Cherokee mother, it was possible for him or her to have a clan if adopted by a clan. Persons of the same clan were not allowed to marry one another. They were considered to be close relatives. Many people today still follow this custom.
Some people are not comfortable sharing their clans openly. Follow your family's lead on this.
