Lesson 3 Getting to Know You
Dialogue
This is what you will hear being said in the dialogues on the video. Your teacher may want you to watch the video first, study the vocabulary (listed below) before watching the video, or practice the reading first. Follow your teacher's lead.

Na ni: V, to hi gwo. O si gwo tsu?
A yo s di: V. O si gwu. Do de tsa do a?

Na ni: Ha wa. De na da go hv yu.
A yo s di: Su na le.
ACTIVITY: Write or type the dialogue in your notes. Practice the dialogue aloud with your classmates in groups of two. Be prepared to present the dialogue as a skit for the class. During your practice, take on each of the roles at least once, and then decide who will have each of the roles for your final presentation. Remember to look at the vocabulary list to find your particular community. Use your own parents’ names to talk about that part of the dialogue.
Cultural Note: It is typical for Cherokee people to introduce themselves by stating what community they come from and who their parents are. These are important things for you to know how to say.
Homework: Use your syllabary chart to rewrite the dialogue in the syllabary. Next, look at the vocabulary list to find the names of communities in our area. Create a map with the communities on it in both phonetics and the syllabary.
Language Notes:
1. Some people say ka gi yu s di or ka gi yu s di instead of ka ga hno.
2. The syllabary character for hno does not exist separately from the one for no, even though the “h” sound is used in this syllable by many speakers.
3. Notice that some of the vocabulary words and community names are given with some syllable variations. You may have heard still others in your family or community, depending on how certain speakers pronounce these names. Often, the last vowel sound in a word varies from one community or one speaker to another. The meaning of the words does not change. It is just how the speaker prefers to pronounce the word.
