Siyo! Hello! Welcome to the Swain County Schools Tsalagi Tsiwoniha site.
This program was made possible through a grant from the Cherokee Preservation Foundation in Cherokee, North Carolina. It also would not have been possible without the participation of our Cherokee speakers, to whom we are especially grateful: Shirley Oswalt, Gilliam Jackson, Nannie Taylor, Sally Smoker, Janie Brown, Myrtle Driver, Justice Littlejohn, Myrna Climbingbear, Mary Brown, JC Wachacha, and Angela Squirrel. The collaboration between Mary Brown, a Cherokee language teacher and fluent speaker at Swain County High School, and Kathy de Cano, the curriculum designer, were also essential to the program's creation and fruition. Absolutely vital to the process was our video team, consisting of Joe Holt, cameraman, Brandon DeHart and Madison York, assistants, and Megan Nations, who did both camera work and all of the editing. Sgi, nigada! Thank you, everyone! Together, we made this happen.
This program is designed to be used by a Cherokee language teacher as a resource for the classroom. It is not a stand alone program. Through interaction with the videos on our You Tube channel (or on the lesson pages themselves) and the written lessons and other resources that accompany them here, students can experience the language in a communicative format that allows them to listen, speak, read, write, and learn something of the culture as well.
It is recommended that students complete an initial unit with their teachers to learn to read and write the Cherokee syllabary. From there, these thematic lessons can enhance the Cherokee language teacher's instruction. We hope you enjoy our program and find it useful. Sgi! Thank you!
